Ever wondered why a light but bulky box costs so much to ship? It's volumetric weight. Here's how it works — and how to pay less.
Volumetric (or dimensional) weight estimates how much space a parcel takes up. A common formula is:
length × width × height (cm) ÷ 5000 = volumetric kg
Carriers charge on whichever is greater — your parcel's actual weight or its volumetric weight. So a big box of pillows can cost more than a small box of books.
Consolidation and repacking shrink dimensions, which lowers volumetric weight and your bill. We do this automatically. Try different inputs on the calculator to see the effect.
